How American Singles Really Feel About Consensual Non-Monogamy (Time.com, 1/24/24)

Reasonably informative, brief read - with some surprising numbers (or so it seems to me). The article mentions the origins of CNM going back to the pre-agrarian tribal times - as Ryan discusses in detail in his classic book "Sex At Dawn" (highly recommended).

Wow, Helen Fisher has changed her tune. She used to be very anti-poly! She advised it was unnatural, irresponsible and practically evil. At least that's what I remember from a decade or so ago.

In this article, Helen Fisher seems to argue strongly in favor of CNM/poly.

I'd be interested in knowing what percentage of married couples have tried CNM/poly, the article says one third of singles, but that is not so surprising. Many singles are "playing the field."

People's beliefs about marriage will have a much stronger effect on who tries CNM/poly.

She's much more against polyamory specifically, than CNM/ENM generally.

I recall seeing the results of a fairly recent study that stated that 20% of the US population has participated in CNM at some point in their lives. I don't recall the details of the study, but in addition to seeing it on the net, I also heard it discussed on the local AM news station, so I suspect it was most likely a credible study. (I don't know if it was discussed here. It was within the last few months, it seems.)

When I dug into the percentage of those who actively practice CNM some time back, I recall seeing figures in the 5-8% range. Of course, this would include poly, swinging, and all the other flavors of CNM.

Most people who practice consensual non-monogamy, who are in their, say, late teens and 20s, are just... dating. lol They still believe in finding The One tm, and settling down. I'd really like to see actual studies and the parameters of their research.
