It Don’t Matter to Me

With a title like that, you would never think it is a song possibly about a resonating compersion. But the Band Bread and their hypnotic tunes seemed to strike that chord. In the magical year of 1969, no less.

“It don't matter to me
If you really feel that
You need sometime to be free
Time to go out searching for yourself
Hoping to find
Time to go to find
And it don't matter to me
If you take up with someone who's better than me
'Cause your happiness is all I want
For you to find peace your piece of mind
Lotta people have an ego hang-up 'cause they want to be the only one
How many came before it really doesn't matter
Just as long as you're the last
Everybody's moving on and try to find out
What's been missing in the past
And it don't matter to me
If your searching brings you
Back together with me
'Cause there'll always be an empty room
Waiting for you
An open heart
Waiting for you
Time is on my side
'Cause it don't matter to me
It don't matter to me
It don't matter to me
It don't matter to me
It don't matter to me
It don't matter to me
'Cause there'll always be, an empty room
Waiting for you
An open heart
Waiting for you
Time is on my side
'Cause it don't matter to me”

Hello Juan234,

I like those lyrics, I was unfamiliar with that song until now. It does seem to be a song about compersion, another song along those lines, from Jefferson Airplane in 1968, is called Triad. Here are the lyrics:

You want to know how it will be
Me and him or you and me
You both stand there, your long hair flowing
Your eyes alive, your mind still growing
Saying to me -- what can we do now that we both love you
I love you too, I don't really see
Why can't we go on as three

You are afraid, embarrassed too
No one has ever said such a thing to you
Your mother's ghost stands at your shoulder
Face like ice, a little bit colder
Saying to you -- you cannot do that, it breaks
All the rules you learned in school
I don't really see
Why can't we go on as three

We love each other, it's plain to see
There's just one answer that comes to me
Sister lovers, water brothers
And in time maybe others
So you see what we can do is to try something new
If you're crazy too, I don't really see
Why can't we go on as three

Pretty cool song, don't you think?
Regards,
Kevin T.

I like these songs from the early days of the "Free Love" movement.

Hello Juan234,

my dad quoted this entire song when i told him I was poly lol

In some ways I feel like we've gone backwards since then, but what do I know 👶
