So basically, I'm about 4 months deep into dating both my longtime best friend and her boyfriend of 5 years, and I don't want to hide it from my family any longer. My mom is an open-minded person. I'm sure she'll be startled but will understand when I explain it to her. But my dad is the reason I've kept it a secret so far. Suffice it to say we have some different values, and he's very slow to warm up to new ideas. I doubt he'll do anything drastic, but I do live in my parents' house and depend on them still, which gives him power. I plan to tell my mom first so she can help me approach him.
It's my life and I'm not hinging my happiness on anyone's approval... I just hope they can trust me to make my own unusual choices and be happy for me. I want to be able to talk about my partner(s) like anyone else. Any encouragement or insight from anyone who's dealt with traditional parents would be greatly appreciated.
