Finding Partners

Thank-you :)

I make sure we're friends first before I can call it an FWB situation, and friendship takes time. I don't get how that's feasible from an online ad, though I know it works for some. If it's online, I settle for a fuck buddy, which I think is more attainable.

The great thing about OKC is that the profiles are much more than an ad. They can be as meaningful and as thorough as you make them and your profile can definitely attract people who are looking for real friendships that have the potential to develop into something deeper. As we talked about initially, really look over what you are putting out there. If you're expecting that fuck buddies are about the best you can do "online," then fuck buddies are what you're gonna get. I am very clear in my profile (when it's active) that I'm interested in serious solo poly relationships and I've had some lovely relationships as a result, two of which have passed the year mark. Everything turns on your profile, just as everything in "real life" turns on what you're putting out there. Of course there's always a weeding process, but if you're attracting person after person who just doesn't get you, examine how you're presenting yourself and adjust your signal to attract people who are more attuned to what you're all about. OKC isn't full of people who are this way or that way, it's got millions of members and is an enormous soup of visions and desires. The more you hone and the better you present your desires, the more visible you'll be to people who have similar visions of a good relationship.

"Netflix and chill" means having sex - any kind, anywhere, any how. It just means having sex.

Ha! I thought, when the OP wrote "Netflix and chill is the staple of my age group," she meant that since she wants to meet people who are activity-oriented, she was frustrated about only seemed to be attracting people who wanted to watch movies on Netflix and do nothing, like couch potatoes. So, I was wondering why she thought everyone who contacts her only wants sex.

How the the hell did that phrase come to mean sex -- and when did that start getting used? I feel like I really missed something! How the hell did anyone know what she meant?

Same with me nycindie! My 40 something SO knew what it meant but I had no idea that could mean sex. My husband's comment was "I still have trouble remembering that "hooking up" now has a different meaning. My SO put on his grampa voice and said "These young kids and their slang".

LOL, I had to remind myself of that for a long time before it stuck, and I still catch myself saying it to mean just getting together.

I guess we're just silly old fogeys.

I had no idea it used to mean that!

I came across the reference a few weeks ago when I was looking for Netflix recommendations.

‘Netflix and chill’: the complete history of a viral sex catchphrase
"It began as a plain, descriptive phrase (“Can’t wait to leave work so I can watch Netflix and chill!”), and stayed that way for several years before acquiring a loose sexual connotation (“Wanna come over for Netflix and chill? ;)”) and, eventually becoming a known code phrase (“He said he loves me, but I know he just wants to Netflix and chill”)."

If one converts from the older meaning of "hook up" to the newer, battle histories become rather something else -
From a history of a battalion in WW I:
"Major Hamilton gave orders to form the battalion for attack in a westerly direction and to push west to the St. Etienne-Blancmont Road, then to swing northwest up the ridge.... and hook up with the other two battalions on their left." Whoo hoo!

I am relieved that is not just me who thought it meant watching tv.
I have missed out on so much OKcupid hot sex :D. Oh yeah baby, Netflix and Chill me all night long!

I sent out 4 texts to online daters asking for their take. Will update later.

Haha! I'm sorry. It's such a common phrase now, that it's practically ubiquitous. I didn't really think about anyone not understanding.

It's true that a lot of the people who contact me only want to watch Netflix, or otherwise laze about. Netflix and chill pretty much means come over and have sex. Person invites you over under the pretext of watching Netflix, but they really just want to hookup.

I'm pretty sure hookup used to mean connection when I was a kid. I didn't know about it being hanging out.

Ah! "Would you like to come up and see my etchings?"

Leetah

"Etchings" and "Come in for coffee." "Time for a night cap?"
Sorry to hijack your thread ICanB. Having said that...survey results.

2 Knew it to mean sex. Ages of 47 and 51.
3 Did not. Ages of 44, 48, 56.

I tried to make a poll and post it in General Poly Forum, but I couldn't work it out.

I'm kind of happy the thread turned into this.

From what I understand, a nightcap comes after a date? Netflix is the "date." But yeah, it's pretty much one of the oldest tricks in the books. I'm now imagining the better behaved cave people using "come and look at my cave drawings."

Wow - I had no idea. I'm 42.

I might turn up with my knitting if somebody invited me to watch Netflix and chill with them. lol. This forum is such a source of education. :D

Really? How did that come about? I always thought it meant watching a movie together instead of going out.

Edit: I wrote that before reading the whole thread. Interesting.

Yes this thread did take a turn, lol.

For the poll:
Yes i knew it mean's sex, although i remember when it didn't
My wife has no idea what it mean's
I always thought that meaning of hooking was dependent on the context, Does that just mean sex now also?

I think it's all dependent on context.

I just asked Cat what it meant to her. She said it meant they were probably stoners...lol.

When Sprite invites me over for Netflix it means sex is probably not in the cards. Otherwise she would be inviting me over to play.
