Hello from Tornado Alley

Hello all. I joined this forum because, while I'm sure my definition of polyamory is correct, a Facebook group with the same name has me thinking double.

From what I gather, Polyamory means multiple loves (loosely translated, can't remember the exact terminology used to define the word). And Polyamory is different than cheating, swinging, polygamy, etc.... Correct? Well this certain group seems to think otherwise.... And men are all sexist demons...

Now to my/our introduction. While you will have to excuse me on not mentioning any names or locations yet ( It's nothing against anyone here, but I am a member of many forums, and on a couple things took a turn for the worse). Anywho, My wife and I have been together for almost 6 years all together, and my wife has known our girlfriend for 8 years (I've known her for pretty much the whole time we've been together). A few months ago, we discovered that we are all madly in love with each other, so we made it official and are actually dating now :D. I honestly don't know what else to say lol, but at least with us, our relationship is about more than just sex. I have some political/legal/religious questions pertaining to marriage of poly groups, but i'll cover that at a later date. for now, thanks for the add!

Greetings matchingset,
Welcome to our forum. Please feel free to lurk, browse, etc.

Folks could argue til the cows come in about what's "the right definition of poly" (ur doin it rong! :)), but for what it's worth, here's my best shot at it: "The state of being, ability to be, or inclination to be, in a romantically-connected group of three or more consenting adults." The triad you're in definitely fits the bill.

Some instances of polygamy could actually be considered a subset of polyamory -- those that meet the "consenting adults" clause. And while swinging tends to differ from polyamory in that polyamory has more emotional involvement with one's partners, there's not always a fine dividing line between swing and poly. It's more like a slider. Finally, there are those who prescribe the acceptance of cheating as a (dysfunctional) subset of poly. I'm willing to dialog with people on their terms as they define them, but I think the majority consensus is that cheating falls outside the poly spectrum because it lacks the "consenting" part in "consenting adults." *All* of the adults in the equation have to know what's going on and be okay with it. Otherwise: not poly.

Re:
"And men are all sexist demons ..."

Except white men, who are all sexist devils. :) A subtle but necessary difference.

Anyway, I'm glad you could join us, and hope to participate in your upcoming political/legal/religious discussion.

Sincerely,
Kevin T., "official greeter" :)
