I agree with kdt and suggest being open and honest with your meta, especially now that you can see both sides of the situation. I think she needs to see both sides too. It sounds like you're SO is conscious of whats going on and is gracious enough to stick up for the both of you when need be, but it would look confrontational if it was coming from him. Plus it puts him in an awkward spot and the two of you should have that open communication with each other. It will help find your common ground and will build respect on both sides.
And you shouldn't have to feel guilty that he was taking care of you, it's what SO's want to do. If you both love each other you both need that for your own relationship.
