Marriage proposal broke my heart - changing life of your partners

Someone I truely love that in another time or place we could have been life partners. She loves me and she is the closest emotional friend I have these last 3 years. She is monogamous and 1/2 my age.

She told me she just got engaged and my heart just broke my forever hopeful.

I wondered about the experience of others. Perhaps a shorter more compatible relationship with traditional goals such as marriage suddenly closes a door but doesn't end the relationship but changes it. Moving in, pregnancy, disabilty / injury of a metamour, death all have a dramatic impact on the course of your relationship.

Tell me of an abrupt change of dreams you did not realize you had.
 
Someone I took a shine to, recently got married. I didn't really have any prospects of being the one to become her partner, but somewhere in the back of my mind it used to be a kind of fantasy for me. So when she got married, my insides sunk just a little. Even though the guy she married seems like a really nice man, and I'm happy for that part.
