mortgages, taxes, merging finances, legalities, adoption

I gotta disagree.

The thread is about ways to give a nonmonogamous family powers similar to legal marriage. My feeling is that any authorities who take a dislike to this might find it easy to shift definitions moment-to-moment to their advantage. In order to head this off, anything involving the juggling of cash, taxes, rights, etc., should be vetted by a lawyer or CPA, & maybe both.

I hope y'all will stop discussing my tax situation soon. I don't want your counsel/info/advice. It's not helping me and it's not making any difference (not for the better anyway).

Apologies for a misunderstanding -- this wasn't offered in reference to YOU.

But the scenario HAS been posited, so I figure there are people who'll consider it. And clearly, given that the IRS has a checklist for it, it's not a rare situation.

Well, duh. Of course, one should consult a professional. I never said one shouldn't.

BTW, an accountant doesn't have to be a CPA to be a Tax Preparer and knowledgeable about IRS rules.

FTR, I wasn't directing any of my posts to you, Kevin. It was actually Bluebird's situation that got me curious about it. Plus, I've shared my apartment many times in my life and wanted to know in case I do it again.
