Im thinking of writing professionally...

One of the most surprising things that I've found about myself, is the way that I'm able to express myself in words. I'm having so much fun, turning my journey into a story, and bringing people along for the ride! I love to inspire specific emotions that have no name. I feel like a court bard, and all of you are hanging on my every word!

I could probably get paid for this.

Now, I'll be honest. I don't spend a lot of time reading the kinds of things I've been writing here. I certainly don't judge anyone who does, because that's you! But I'm curious; what are some other good sources for this kind of storytelling? I cant be the only silver-tongued storyteller you know! What would be an ambitious platform or publication for my style of writing?

Hi Adam,

You do definitely have a talent for expressing yourself in words, I think you could do well in the publishing industry. Perhaps you could google "publishers," and see if there's any lists out there. I'm thinking it is hard to get published initially, but once you get your foot in the door it's not so bad. I hope you'll keep posting on Polyamory.com in any case!

Sincerely,
Kevin T.

I'll absolutely keep posting here, and if I go pro I'll see if I can plug this site. This community is important!

I will be searching for publishers, but if I'm including web publishers, my ignorance of pop culture makes that a wide net to cast. That's why Im looking here first for specific recommendations, since you already read the kind of stuff I write. And when I say ambitious I mean it! It may not be the first one to pick me up, but what if I could shoot for something like Maxim, or Playboy? Are there better fits for my style? I honestly don't know!

Yeah, you could submit some of your writings to magazines, and see if one or more of them will accept them. I hear Playboy actually publishes some interesting articles, they're not all about sex. Maxim I'm not familiar with, but probably a similar situation there. You do have to be prepared to receive some rejections, and still keep trying, keep submitting writings in spite of the rejections. But I'm not a good one to ask, I don't write professionally, and don't have much knowledge of the publishing industry. I just know that if you keep at it, it will probably eventually pay off.

Nowadays you get published if you have followers on Twitter, or a very popular blog, online things like that. I thought Playboy folded. Your breathless style sounds more like Cosmopolitan to me, or copy on blurbs on YouTube for the TV show Extra, things like that.

You could self-publish if you had the funds for it. However, less people are reading actual books now. They're reading on Kindle type devices or apps.

I do know there is a thriving market for female-centered feminist erotica/porn. These women authors support each other at cons and whatnot. In our culture, it seems women would rather read erotica than look at porn? (I'm non-binary, so I'm not sure if this is true or just what cis-women admit to.)

However, since you're a guy, unless you use a female-sounding pseudonym, you may not be accepted writing from a women's pov.

That's the kind of suggestion I was looking for, thanks! Not that I'm going to just start submitting stuff to Cosmo, but now I have something to study up on. What kind of articles are written in my style? Where else are those authors published? Stuff like that. As for building a reader base, I think I'm doing a good job of that here. I know it's a niche community, and probably not much of a launchpad, but I'm learning how to connect with readers, and build a following. These will be important skills if I want to pursue writing, especially if I stick to editorials! I got some advice from David on the subject, and he told me that what I'm doing now is a good start, and that I should let it develop as organically as possible. I think that was good advice, too.

Bird-by-Bird is a good book on creative writing. Highly recommend it.

Help a friend write a book in the past few years and she "self published" which was much more than I even realized. It took her a few years to get things lined up. One of the big differences learned during this was publishing books is different process then epubs which is a different process then kindle.

If you get to the point of deciding to self publish, I do book design and conversions professionally amongst other things. Won’t _do_ it for free but I can totally give you some pointers.

Thanks for the pointers! I'll keep those in mind if I go for book publication, but I think I'm more comfortable with the idea of writing articles for now. I tend to flounder on extended projects. Maybe that's one of those things I'll be able to improve upon with my new life outlook!

I haven't got the chance to read what your wrote, but I hope you do get published! You post them here or do you have a blog?

I do have a blog here on the forum, but I haven't taken it anywhere else yet.

Thanks for your interest! Maybe at some point I'll put some of my poetry up in the Fireplace board, if there is any interest in that.
