I recall family pictures from that era with my grandfather and his younger brother in dresses. He was five in the picture and born, I believe, in 1912. Picture was taken on the family farm in rural NW PA. Makes me wonder if there was, perhaps, a travelling photographer that staged all these "farm family" pictures. No one in the pictures is smiling - but they were of stoic German stock, so...
