What is an open relationship?

My partner is a little unsure. He wants to know what an open relationship entails. He agrees that our sex life isn't great. I'm needing more than he can give me.

But please, can you guys help?

There are a LOT of different ways of doing open relationships. We recommend a book called Opening Up by Tristan Taormino which has real life stories from couples opening their relationships in different ways.

We also have a sort of master list of resources here - it's a lot to try and take in so use the descriptions to pick and choose:

Thread 'Most commonly cited resources: Articles, books, websites, podcasts, etc.' https://polyamory.com/threads/most-...-articles-books-websites-podcasts-etc.155304/

Edited to add:
Designer Relationships by Mark A. Michaels and Patricia Johnson may be another good start.
It's on the list, bottom of the books in the first post.

Hello Phoenixbluereborn86,

"Open" is a somewhat ambiguous term. It often means casual sex with multiple people, but it can mean other things instead, it can even mean polyamory. Not that it matters, you and your partner can draw up your own boundaries, and decide what works for the two of you (and for your other partners, when the time comes).

Just some thoughts,
Kevin T.
