Hello froundponddotcom,

My view is that polyamory is any instance in which someone has more than one romantic partner -- with the knowledge and consent of all, of course.

I describe polyamory as structuring one's serious romantic relationships to be romantically non-exclusive, with the consent and knowledge of all parties involved. I dislike the definition that polyamory is having multiple romantic partners, because you can be poly and single, or poly but only have one current partner. I also don't describe it as being able to experience romantic love for more than one person at a time, because many people can experience that while only being willing to be in monogamous relationships.

I have always seen it defined as "having or being open to having" multiple loving relationships. Leaving out the part about being open to multiple relationships pretty much discounts anyone who is de facto monogamous due to circumstances like a breakup or from not meeting someone suitable for another relationship, or anyone who is de facto single without any partners at all. Most people do experience transition periods in their love lives, and with dating, so IMHO the willingness to practice polyamory is as important as practicing it.
